7 Signs Your iPhone Battery Needs Replacing

A battery that no longer fits your daily routine may need attention, but one symptom does not prove that replacement is the answer. Apps, charging accessories and other faults can affect power use. These seven signs are reasons to investigate and discuss an assessment, rather than an automatic diagnosis.
1. The charge runs down much faster
Compare similar days rather than one unusually busy day. Navigation, video calls and poor signal can use more power than light messaging. If runtime has steadily shortened during familiar use, note the pattern and look at battery usage in Settings before contacting the shop.
2. The phone shuts down unexpectedly
A phone that turns off while still showing charge deserves assessment. An ageing battery may struggle to provide power under load, but other faults are possible. Record when shutdowns occur and whether the phone starts again only after being connected to a charger.
For a model-specific enquiry, see our battery replacement information.
3. Performance has changed
A worn battery can be one factor in performance changes. Slow response alone is not enough to identify it: storage, software and demanding apps also matter. Share the combination of symptoms instead of requesting a battery solely because the device feels slower than it used to.
4. Battery health shows a warning
Depending on your iPhone and software, battery settings may display capacity information or a service message. These readings help the discussion but are not a complete test of the phone. Tell the technician exactly what the message says and whether it appeared after a previous repair.
5. The screen or enclosure is lifting
A lifting screen or separating enclosure may indicate battery swelling. Stop using and charging the device. Do not press it closed, puncture it or attempt to remove the battery. Contact a repair professional for safe handling and transport advice before bringing it in.
Do not treat swelling as a routine battery-life inconvenience. If the device is smoking or presents an immediate hazard, move away and seek emergency help rather than handling it. Your safety matters more than attempting another backup or charging test.
6. Charging is unreliable
Slow or intermittent charging can involve the battery, but a cable, adapter or connector may be responsible. If the device is dry and undamaged, an undamaged compatible accessory can help distinguish an external problem. Stop testing if heat, damage or moisture is present.
7. Age and usage are catching up
Rechargeable batteries wear through time and use. There is no universal replacement birthday for every iPhone: charging history, operating conditions and everyday demands differ. Consider actual runtime and symptoms alongside age, rather than replacing a battery simply because another owner did.

Turn observations into a useful enquiry
Write down your exact model, typical runtime, charging behaviour and any warning messages. Ask about the proposed battery source, compatibility, cost and repair terms. If the phone is safe to use, back up before service. Do not share account passwords or a device passcode in an online form.
